Technician inspecting belts and hoses on a heavy-duty truck during preventive maintenance in Little Rock, AR.

Belts and hoses are easy to overlook during day-to-day operation, but wear in either can eventually leave a truck sitting on the side of the road. A quick inspection can help identify developing problems before they turn into unexpected downtime.

At Central Arkansas Truck & Trailer in Little Rock, AR, preventive maintenance is about finding those problems early. Here are a few simple checks Nathan Dunn recommends for your truck’s belts and hoses.

Check Your Hoses While the Engine Is Cold

The best time to inspect coolant hoses is early in the day before the truck has been running and the engine is still cool.

Gently squeeze and feel the hoses. They should have some flexibility, but a hose that feels excessively soft or “squishy” may be deteriorating and should be inspected more closely.

Avoid using this test immediately after running the engine. Heat changes the way the hose feels and, more importantly, the cooling system may be hot and pressurized.

Inspect Your Belts for Visible Damage

Take a close look at the belts while the engine is off. Watch for obvious signs of deterioration, including:

  • Cuts
  • Cracks
  • Breaks
  • Fraying or other visible wear

Catching belt damage during an inspection gives you an opportunity to replace a worn component before it fails on the road.

Pay Attention to Belt Tension

Some movement from the belt tensioner is normal. Nathan recommends checking for excessive play while inspecting the belt and tensioner.

If the belt appears unusually loose, the tensioner is moving excessively, or you’re unsure whether the amount of movement is normal, have the system inspected rather than waiting for a failure.

Preventive Maintenance Can Save You Downtime

Small signs of wear can be easy to ignore when a truck is still running normally. Regular belt and hose inspections are a simple part of preventive maintenance that can help identify problems before they interrupt a route.

Everything was top notch, the work, the facilities and amenities, the people and the overall experience.
